Description
High Prairie Farm (Brookings) offers a mix of the Heirloom “Brandywines” and “Cherokee Purple” slicing tomatoes this season. Both are grown using organic methods.
Brandywine Tomatoes are a large rounded variety, and can grow up to 7 inches in diameter and weigh up to one pound. They have watermelon-colored flesh and are known for their unique, intense flavor that’s sweet, fruity, and slightly spice with a rich taste.
Cherokee Purple Tomatoes have a dark, dusty rose color with green-tinged shoulders. They’re very sweet and have a rich, almost smoky flavor. The fruit is large, thick-skinned, and refreshingly acidic.
Both varieties are well suited to eating fresh out of hand, though they can also be dried, canned, stewed, roasted, or baked into various recipes. Sliced, these tomatoes can be topped with basil, balsamic vinegar, and mozzarella cheese for a caprese salad or used in a burger or sandwich. They can be an ingredient in savory tarts, sautéed with pasta, stewed into a heirloom tomato soup or cooked into ketchup
To achieve their best taste, all tomatoes should be stored at room temperature (i.e. NOT in the refrigerator), and used within a week or less.
