Description

Quince is a hard, aromatic, golden-yellow fruit that is similar in size to a pear but with a bumpier appearance. Quinces are high in vitamin C and fiber, and can be eaten raw in some varieties, while others are too astringent and sour to eat raw. At the turn of the 20th century almost every rural family had a fruiting quince tree they relied on for medicine, pectin, and fragrant, long-lasting fruits.

This variety, known as “Pineapple Quince”, is a large, intensely fragrant, firm and sweet/tart fruit, prized for cooking, jelly making, and adding to apple cider (it is too sour for most folks to eat raw). It was developed by Luther Burbank, who spent decades developing a variety that would cook quickly and without the woody internal patches that could be found on other old varieties.

Grown by Smith River Organic Farm (Smith River) and “Registered Organic” in California – a special certification program meant specifically for small growers. Sold by the pound.
