Norm Lehne Garden & Orchards in Roseburg harvests, shells, and packages their own walnuts each winter, and makes them available at their farmers’ market stand. This is one of the few local farms who grow walnuts, so we feel fortunate to be able to secure a portion of Lehne’s harvest for our customers!
Lehne harvests their walnuts in the fall (usually up through November), hand-shells them and stores them in the freezer to maintain freshness. (Keeping walnuts cold as long as possible ensures a high-quality, fresh-tasting walnut.) Walnuts are the only nut significantly high in ALA Omega-3s, which are essential fatty acids critical to various body processes.
Store your walnuts in the refrigerator if you plan to use them right away; if you want to store them for a month or more, put them in your freezer. Walnuts go rancid when exposed to warm temperatures for long periods of time. Fresh walnuts smell mildly nutty and taste sweet. If your walnuts smell like paint thinner, you know they’re rancid. And if they’re rancid, you should throw them away!
